Flint Knapping Workshop with Karl Lee

Price: £80 per day

Using only authentic ‘prehistoric type’ tools and raw materials, learn how to produce a collection of usable tools based on those made by our so called ‘primitive’ ancestors.

Over the course of the day you will take part in practical workshops and see a number of demonstrations to learn how to manufacture the tools of our ancestors.  See what tools were used to butcher the woolly Mammoth and Rhino in Southern Britain, and the new technology that enabled the early inhabitants of Britain to travel further afield from flint rich regions.

Create an array of tools relating to all areas of bushcraft and survival skills, such as hunting, butchery, cutting, carving and many other cutting tasks.

You will leave the course having gained an insight into the fundamentals of lithic (stone) technology, and produced a collection of useable tools and blades.

The course fee of £80 per person includes all instruction, specialist equipment and a cooked lunchtime meal.

The sessions are conducted entirely outdoors in ancient semi-natural woodland within an expedition style camp setting offering basic facilities, so some previous camping experience is recommended.  The course will go ahead in all weather and a reasonable level of fitness is required.

The content of the weekends will include, but is not limited to:

  • Practical hands on workshops exploring the fundamental skill of flint knapping

  • Learn how to select flint

  • The tools of the trade

  • Percussion flaking using hard and soft hammers

  • Basic pressure flaking

  • Demonstrations of advanced flint knapping techniques
